Construction

The ANSI 150 cast steel swing check valve

Cast carbon steel body, 13% chrome seat faces, graphite gasket.

A disc on a hinge inside a cast ASTM A216 WCB body, with ANSI 150# flanges at both ends, in 1½″ to 6″ (DN40 to DN150). Forward flow lifts the disc clear of the bore; when flow stops, the disc falls shut onto its seat.

What separates it from the other four swing check variants is heat. Its gasket is SS304 + graphite, not PTFE, and graphite takes far more temperature. That is why this variant states −29 to 425 °C where the threaded SS316 stops at 180 °C and three others state no temperature at all.

425 °C — far above the rest

The only one of the five that states a temperature above 180 °C. The graphite gasket is what buys it; PTFE would not get there.

The only one that reaches 6″

Seven sizes, 1½″ to 6″. The other four stop at 4″ or 2″. If the line is bigger than 4″, this is the only swing check available.

⚠ This is not a stainless valve

Body, disc, hinge and bonnet are cast carbon steel A216 WCB. For corrosive duty, use the SS316 variant on the same flange.

F6 where it matters

The seat is A105 + F6 and the disc is WCB + F6 — 13% chrome stainless on the two faces that press against each other thousands of times. Far harder and more erosion-resistant than the bare WCB behind them.

One moving part

The disc, on an A276 410 hinge pin. No handle, no stem, no actuator. Nine items on the parts list in total.

The bolted bonnet is how you get in

A193 Gr.B7 bolts with Gr.2H nuts. The disc, hinge and pin come out through the top — leave headroom above the valve, not just length in the run.

1. Side elevation

A heavy cast body with the bolted bonnet above it. That ribbed shape is the A216 WCB casting.

2. The casting marks

“AF · 1½ · 150 · WCB” cast into the body. The maker's mark, size, class and material are all in the casting, so the valve can be identified on the wall with no paperwork.

3. The flange face

Raised face and bolt holes. This is the face that has to match your pipework — bolt circle D1 and hole pattern z-d in the size table.

4. The bolted bonnet

How you get at the disc. Undo the bolts and the disc, hinge and pin come out through the top — so check the overhead clearance before fitting.

Flange thickness b is 15 mm at 1½″, 16 mm at 2″, 19 mm at 2½″ and 3″, then 24 mm from 4″ up — as printed.

⚠ This is a long valve

356 mm face-to-face at 6″ and 288 mm at 4″. If the gap in your run is shorter, a wafer-bodied dual plate check puts similar internals into far less space.

Height H is the body height, not the clearance

260 mm at 6″. The bonnet lifts off upward to get the disc out — leave more headroom than that figure.

⚠ Check the bolt circle before you order

ANSI 150# will not bolt to a JIS 10K flange, whatever the pressure rating says.

Bore d equals DN at every size

38 mm at 1½″, 51 mm at 2″, 152 mm at 6″ — a fully open disc lifts clear of the bore, so the pressure drop is low.

The graphite gasket is what buys the temperature

SS304 + graphite, not PTFE. It is the one part that separates this variant from the other four, and the reason it states 425 °C.

F6 only on the seat and disc faces

13% chrome stainless on the two faces that press against each other. The body itself is bare WCB — this is not a stainless valve.

An A276 410 hinge pin

Martensitic stainless, chosen for hardness: this pin carries the whole swinging load of the disc every time the valve closes.

The bolting is alloy steel

A193 Gr.B7 bonnet bolts with Gr.2H nuts — the same alloy-steel pressure bolting used on the cast steel flange end ball valves.

Questions we get asked

Why is this the variant for hot duty?

Because it is the only one of the five swing check variants that states a temperature above 180 °C: −29 to 425 °C. Its gasket is SS304 + graphite rather than PTFE, and graphite takes far more heat. The other four do not come close.

What sizes are available?

1½″ to 6″ (DN40 to DN150), seven sizes. This is the only swing check variant in the range that goes past 4″. Note the length: at 6″ it needs 356 mm of pipe run to itself.

Is this a stainless valve?

No. Body, disc, hinge and bonnet are cast carbon steel ASTM A216 WCB. The seat and disc faces are F6 — 13% chrome stainless — and the hinge pin is A276 410. For corrosive duty, use the ANSI 150 SS316 variant on the same flange.

What is F6, and why is it on the seat and disc?

F6 is 13% chrome stainless steel. It is used as the seat face and the disc face because those are the two parts that press against each other thousands of times. A 13% chrome face is far harder and more erosion-resistant than the bare WCB behind it.

What are the test pressures?

Shell 3.0 MPa, seal 2.2 MPa and air seal 0.6 MPa, at 150# nominal. Those are factory proof tests, not working pressures — do not design to them.

How many moving parts are there?

One — the disc, on its hinge pin. There is no handle, stem or actuator; the flow operates it. The parts list is nine items in total, and the bolted bonnet above is how you get at the disc.

How should it be oriented?

Will it bolt to a JIS 10K flange?

No. An ANSI 150# flange does not mate with JIS 10K, whatever the pressure rating says. The bolt circle and hole pattern differ. For JIS pipework, use the JIS 10K SS316 variant.
